Olaf and Jim Olaf’s Hatred Toward Jim Olaf’s hatred toward Jim in the “ crowing Black rock-steady Man” was unnecessary. His fear of Jim is what initially caused this hatred. Olaf had no reason to fear or hate Jim. He contemn Jim just because of who he was; a “Big Black expert Man” (Wright 265). Olaf’s hatred of Jim is manifested in several shipway throughout the story; when he called Jim a spade, after his conversation with Lena, and his fantasy of a white shark eating Jim. Olaf’s first sign of hatred is when he called Jim a nigger in his thoughts.

Olaf hate Jim so much that he called him out of his name. To Olaf, Jim was not point a black man; he was just a orotund black nigger.
